About us
The mission of the African Association of Urban Mobility Authorities (AUMA) is to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and strengthen the skills of its members in the planning, coordination, regulation, management and financing of urban transport systems in Africa. During the Sustainable Mobility and Climate Week (SMDC) held in Dakar in October 2022, a first meeting took place between several urban mobility authorities (UMA’s) and the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP). At the end of the discussions, the participants unanimously recognized the need to create a formal exchange framework in the form of an African Association of Urban Mobility Authorities, whose launch SSATP proposed to support. The Association’s Constitutive General Assembly was held on February 21, 2023 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This Constitutive General Assembly was organized with the support of SSATP and hosted by Autorité de la Mobilité Urbaine dans le Grand Abidjan (AMUGA). At this meeting, the founding members adopted the Association’s by-laws and internal regulations.

Through the creation of AUMA, our aim is to strengthen links between UMAs facing common challenges. Our platform is positioned as an opportunity to share knowledge and organize mutual support. Effectively managing urban mobility requires a strategic approach at both large and local levels, involving coherent planning, coordination of interventions and the introduction of new infrastructures and services. This is why existing UMAs in various African countries are needed to strengthen urban transport strategy and governance, particularly in African metropolises with high population and urban growth rates.
